This article shares some notes on how you should approach and navigate Ellipsis’ interview and hiring process. This is a general overview of our interview process, after the initial screening of applications.

Having the right team members is extremely important. Arguably nothing is more important! We thus put a lot of time, thought, and effort into our hiring process.
Cover letter and screening questions
The cover letter and screening questions are extremely important. We’ll look to your CV to understand your experience, but your cover letter and answers to the screening questions are the primary ways we’ll assess your application.
We’re looking for candidates to spend a minute understanding what’s special about working at Ellipsis, and then provide some thoughtful responses to the questions.
There is a lot of information available on this Wiki. We understand candidates are busy! We would thus point you to a couple of specific pages you may wish to read before sending your application:

We mention this on all of our job descriptions, but we’ll add it here too: please do not use ChatGPT anywhere in your application. We love technology, but we want to understand what you can do rather than what ChatGPT says in response to our questions.
Before your first interview
If you’re invited for an initial interview, congratulations! We think there might be a fit for the role. We typically receive 500+ applications for each role and interview only a handful of candidates, so this is a major step.
Before your first interview, spending some time familiarising yourself with Ellipsis, who we are, and what we’re trying to achieve, will be useful. Much of this Wiki is publicly accessible, and you’re very welcome to have a read of our documentation.
The vision and values page is a good starting point, and the Playbook has a lot of specific information (especially under Content, SEO, and FALCON AI). On our main website, you can see a lot about how we do things, our offerings, and so on.
Our job descriptions are typically comprehensive, and re-reading this closely is a good idea.
The interview process involves us finding out if you’re the right person for the role, but it also involves you finding out more about if you want to work at Ellipsis. You’ll get more of a sense of this through the interview process, but with the above resources you can also get a clearer sense before your first interview.
The initial interview is a 30 minute video call with a member of the team. This is an initial conversation, and we keep it fairly high level.
You can prepare with the notes above, and there will be an opportunity to answer questions you might have. Some candidates like to prepare these in advance, and some like to respond “live” to topics we’ve discussed on the call. Either is good, but having some questions to ask at the end is a good thing!
We’ll share a Google Meet link with you for the initial interview and all following interviews. Please make sure your computer, camera, and microphone are working ahead of the meeting. Please do not be late! You’re able to join the room early, and joining a couple of minutes early is a great way of being on time!
How we run further interviews varies depending on the role. The interviews get more in-depth as we go through the process. These will involve speaking with other members of the team, including the person who will be your Line Manager and the Managing Director (if you haven’t spoken with them already).
CV deep dive
One of these will typically be a CV deep-dive, where we go through your most recent roles and speak about them in detail. There is naturally less to prepare for this one, as it’s focused on your experiences.
Paid trial project
Towards the end of the interview process, we will ask you to complete a paid trial project with us. This will have a fix-fee renumeration that varies depending on the role, and we’ll pay you regardless of whether or not you are successful.
The aim of the trial project is to see how you deal with work similar to work you’d be doing with the role. We want to understand how you triage work, what you can do, and how you solve problems. This is not client work, and we won’t use your project on client projects; the aim is solely to evaluate your fit with the team. Accordingly, you should see the payment as a nominal renumeration for your time, rather than a market rate.
This is a “take home” project. We understand people have different responsibilities and commitments; we’ll mutually agree on a delivery date, typically 1-2 weeks. The project is typically ~4 hours of work.
We’ll set you up with full details of the project, including who to talk to for any questions, and so on!
Typically following completion of the trial project, we will ask for references from your 2 most recent line managers. We’ll ask you to clear with them speaking with us, and then put us in touch with them directly to arrange a short call.
Negotiation and offer
All being well, the end of the process involves you receiving an offer! One of the ways we keep pay equitable is by listing clear salary ranges on our job descriptions. We’ll agree with you where you sit on the range we’re offering. There is no scope for going above the top of this range; this would immediately undermine the equability of the range.
We’ll agree a start date with you, sign a contract, and then we’re good to go!
